What is a â??sister cityâ?? and how can you travel to one on a budget?Â
Â
A number of cities all over the globe have adopted a sister city in another part of the world to promote greater understanding, among other things, between the two cities and their nations. The sister city â??movementâ?? began at the end of World War II and was instigated by America.
Â
Participating cities aim to develop friendships and foster relationships between their chosen sister cities (some cities have more than one sister) and to encourage peace and understanding between nations. This is done in a number of ways â?? encouraging business and economic relationships through trade and technology, stimulate cultural and creative networks, develop partnerships between cities and countries and to provide the opportunity for sister city citizens to experience other cultures through travel.
Â
Traveling to your sister city may be something you wish to do and it can be done at relatively low cost if you are able to become part of an exchange program. Cultural exchanges between sister cities are generally paid for by your home town. Some cities select students to travel to their sister city for a period of time, (it could be weeks or months) and pay all expenses. If you are a student, investigate what opportunities are available for this type of travel.
Â
Traveling to a sister city is not only for students. Other residents may participate in the program as well. You may be selected as an ambassador of your town to travel to the sister city and take part in projects fostered by the sister cities. You will then likely to be asked to host visitors from the sister city when they travel to your country. If you are able to get on one of these exchange programs you can expect accommodation and food to be taken care of (you will probably be living with a sister city family) but you may have to get involved in fundraising for your trip.
Â
If you think this sounds like a fun (and cheap) way to travel, visit your townâ??s web site and find out about their sister city program. Youâ??ll need to become a member and join in the volunteer program to help with fundraising. You could be asked to host visitors from your sister city and you may get the opportunity to travel. Becoming involved in the sister city program means becoming a part of creating community links and learning about other cultures â?? exactly what traveling is all about. You may even have ideas for your communityâ??s sister city program and how it can further foster its global sistersâ?? relationships.

Whilst the FCO will be giving out important travel advice and, in extremis, will have contingency plans in place to extract British nationals should it ever be deemed necessary, as occurred in 2006 in the Lebanon, most of us will have to rely on tour operators and local representatives to look after us when on holiday. This is where a good travel insurance policy comes into play which, when it all starts to go wrong on holiday, you can fall back on to get you out of trouble.
Returning to the fires raging in Greece, and this applies to any natural disaster in other regions of the world, most travel insurance policies will provide a level of specific cover that can be used to lessen the impact on the insured holiday maker. This cover will range from paying for alternative accommodation should the existing accommodation become uninhabitable to cancelling your trip before you travel or curtailing the trip once away. Before making such a claim, it would be normal for your travel insurance provider to expect the tour operator to provide alternative accommodation free of any extra charges or offer a refund before making any settlement.
Cover should also extend, but do check the small print as policies do differ, to providing emergency medical cover and repatriation in the event that you or your travelling companions are injured or worse. This is no different from suffering a road traffic accident but becomes more complex when incidents are caused as a result of civil commotion and unrest or, say, a terrorist attack. Some policies provide cover for all eventualities but you will have to pay a hefty premium for this and you will have to weigh up the risks of it happening and whether you should really be there in the first place if looking for cover at this end of the travel insurance spectrum.
You have lots of stuff to pack for your trip. How do you decide what stays and what goes? How are you going to fit it all in your pack and how are you going to carry it? Here are some tips to consider when packing for your backpacker trip:
Â
1. Buy a good backpack. Investigate the right kind of backpack for your trip and you will make your packing easier before you go and when on the road.Â
2. Put your sleeping bag in first.Â
3. If you are going to be camping get a tent that is lightweight and durable and pack it in the tent compartment in your backpack.
4. Clothes â?? what are you going to take? Lay everything out on the bed. Now cut it down to half. If youâ??ve got something thatâ??ll youâ??ll only wear a couple of times, leave it behind. Youâ??re backpacking on a budget so itâ??s unlikely youâ??ll be going to any balls or ritzy restaurants. Pack your rain gear where you can reach it quickly. Make sure you have enough layers if you are going to colder areas. Donâ??t forget your gloves and hat.
5. Cooking utensils should be packed where they wonâ??t rub on your other gear and you want to make sure the hard edges donâ??t stick into your back.
6. Food should be packed in outside compartments; you donâ??t want any crumbs getting into your other gear. Carry enough food for a day, just in case. Make sure you have at least one water bottle packed on the outside. And pack water purifying tablets if you are traveling to under-developed countries.
7. Your mattress (if youâ??re taking one) should be strapped to the outside of your pack unless itâ??s small enough to fit on the inside.
8. Camera!
9. Have you got your map? What about a compass if you intend going off road on a hike?
10. Donâ??t forget your matches, first aid kit, army knife, flashlight, batteries, sun screen and sunglasses. A whistle and insect repellant are good items to pack, especially if you plan on doing a lot of hiking. And toilet tissue. Just in case.
11. Have you packed a decent pair of walking/hiking boots? These are essential because any backpacker will be doing a lot of walking.
12. Put in a daypack. This will make day hikes and sightseeing much easier if you can have a smaller pack to use on shorter trips.
13. Money, money belt, travelerâ??s checks and credit card. Along with your passport and necessary visas. Donâ??t take large amounts of cash and keep it safe while traveling.
Â
And there are other things you need to consider before you set out. Keep in mind the following:
Â
* Take out travel insurance.
* Are you taking your mobile phone? If so make sure you have global roaming set up.Â
* Give someone at home a copy of you itinerary and passport.Â
* Get to the airport in plenty of time to enable a smooth check in and time to say goodbye to your loved ones.
Â
Pack well and have a good trip!

Travelling with your pets can pose risks to the health and safety of the animal. Thankfully, the combination of restrictions put into place by airlines and federal organizations can ensure that your pet can travel with you safely. The first thing to know before travelling with your pet is that your animal will need to be in a kennel. Small animals, generally ones that which are less than ten pounds; are allowed to be transported as carry on luggage in the kennels. Larger animals will need to travel in the cargo hold. The kennel needs to meet airline standards before it can be used. The basic rules are simple. There must be enough space in the container for your animal to stand, lay and be able to turn around. This will help ensure that your pet will be as comfortable as possible over the course of the flight. There must also be significant ventilation as the air at higher altitudes will be much more difficult for your animal to breathe. Short snouted pets, such as pugs, are warned strongly against flying as their shorter nasal passages make breathing especially difficult. The kennel should be marked with relevant information such as: owner’s name, address, phone number, pet’s name, how to reach you or whoever is picking up the pet at the destination and feeding schedule (if it is a longer flight). Also, this information should be in legible, large print. The floor of the kennel should be absorbent. Most of the time you can find kennels that will meet all of these standards easily at pet stores or through airlines.
There is much more to flying with your pet then just the kennel. Make sure you take into account the overall health of your pet. Airlines will require vaccinations, medical certificates and other such measures to be in place before your animal can fly. Some of these standards need to be met as far as six months before your flight, and others need to be made within ten days of take-off. Be sure to check with your specific airline well in advance of making your trip as the rules are different from company to company. It is also important to closely check the procedure that needs to be followed at your destination. Many destinations, especially if you are travelling out of the country, will require your pet to be quarantined, or to meet different standards then the airline uses. Make sure you check on the restrictions for your destination well before you commit to bringing your pet along for your trip.
Another important factor to take into account is the time of year in which you will be travelling, and subsequently, the climates that you will be facing throughout your trip. If your pet is not small enough to carry-on, he or she will be in the cargo hold. Cargo holds are not temperature controlled. This means that the temperatures can reach extremes of both hot and cold. For the most part it is not recommended to allow your pet to travel if the temperature is over 85 degrees, or under 45 degrees. The extreme weather can combine with the thin air to make your pet extremely uncomfortable and possibly in danger if it flies with you.
If all of these things fall into place, then you are good to go. At the very least, with this information you can start preparing your pet to travel. Buy your kennel well in advance, and let your pet use it to rest in occasionally so that he or she can become comfortable in it. It is also very important to pack for your pet, not just yourself. He or she will need to have medications, first aid materials, treats, toys, medical information, identification materials, bowls, food, a leash and grooming materials. You should also pack a current photo of your pet in case it gets lost. For easy access, you should pack these items in their own bag so that you do not have to go searching through your luggage to find them. The morning of the flight, be sure to get your pet ready to travel. You must feed the pet within four hours of your scheduled flight. You will be asked to sign a form certifying that it has been fed before it will be loaded. It is also important to make sure your pet is on the same flight as you to help avoid confusion if there is an emergency. When you get on the plane, make sure that the pilot and at least one flight attendant know that your pet is in the cargo hold. If an accident occurs you would not want your pet left in with the cargo while the plane is evacuated. If the staff knows your pet is with the cargo, they can take care of it.
Following these rules can help you to rest at ease knowing that your pet will be safe and comfortable flying with you to your next destination. Have the leash ready when you arrive as your animal will want to get out and stretch just as much as you. Vacationing with your pet can be a very fun and rewarding time. Be sure to take the necessary measures to keep your pet safe, and you will both be able to enjoy the trip.
